PM Ismail Sabri, ex-Bersatu women chief Anina settle defamation suit

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and ex-Bersatu women chief Anina Saadudin have recorded a settlement today over the former’s defamation suit against the latter.

Ismail Sabri, who sued in his personal capacity, and Anina recorded their consent judgment in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

The plaintiff’s counsel Ragunath Kesavan today confirmed the recording of the consent judgment before judge Mohd Firuz Jaffril during online proceedings.

“Parties have entered into a consent judgment based on the terms of the earlier injunction order.

“No order as to costs or damages,” the lawyer said, adding that today's outcome amounts to a full and final settlement over the legal action.

Previously on March 5, Ismail Sabri, who was then senior minister (security) under the then Muhyiddin Yassin administration, filed the lawsuit over Facebook posts and videos alleging he was incompetent in discharging his duty during the movement control order (MCO) period in Malaysia.

Later, on March 11, Ismail Sabri also obtained a High Court order for Anina to take down the alleged defamatory online postings, pending disposal of the main defamation suit.

The 61-year-old Umno veteran, through legal firm Messrs Kesavan, named Anina, 46, as the defendant in the defamation action.

Checks on the judiciary’s online e-filing showed that the firm Messrs Kesavan, which acted for Ismail Sabri, wrote to the High Court on Sept 3 informing that both the plaintiff and defendant have reached an agreement to record a consent judgment.

Through his statement of claim in the lawsuit, Ismail Sabri alleged that Anina posted 13 defamatory remarks and uploaded a video on her Facebook page.

The plaintiff claimed the online postings accused the minister of being incompetent in discharging his duties and implementing strict regulations to combat Covid-19 under the movement control order.

He claimed that the 13 remarks, allegedly made by Anina between Feb 5 and March 3, were also shared by other Facebook users.

Ismail Sabri claimed that the remarks implied he was just a "puppet” in implementing the prime minister’s orders, and that he was an inefficient and incompetent senior minister. - Mkini
