PM speaks to dead security guard's kin, vows to uphold justice

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob reached out to the family of the late Thava Sagayam, who died several months after being assaulted.

Recalling the matter later, Ismail Sabri said he was "saddened and appalled" by the incident.

"Nobody is above the law. Justice must, and will take its course," Ismail Sabri wrote on Twitter in reply to Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran.

Kula Segaran had revealed that Ismail Sabri had tried to call Thava's wife E Philomena, who could not take the call.

Instead, Ismail Sabri spoke to Thava's nephew.

"He (Ismail Sabri) express the feelings of many Malaysians," said Kula Segaran.

Ismail Sabri also thanked Kula Segaran for his concern over the issue.

Thava Sagayam, 64,  a security guard, died on Aug 28. He has been hospitalised since Dec 29 last year when he was assaulted while on duty.

The assailant has been identified as Noor Azhar Muhammad, who was charged under Section 335 of the Penal Code in January for causing grievous hurt.

Following Thava Sagayam's death, there have been calls for prosecutors to reclassify the case as murder. - Mkini
