Warisan president Shafie Apdal has ordered all Warisan leaders to stay vigilant and help those in need - especially those who may be cut off from food access during the current flood crisis in Sabah.
It is estimated that 65 villages have been inundated across Sabah’s west coast due to continuous heavy rainfall on Friday.
“Apart from the vaccine rollout crisis, that remains slow compared to other states in Malaysia, Sabah has also recently been a state at risk of floods due to heavy rainfall
“Residents in areas at risk of flooding should always remain vigilant and sensitive to the current situation so that necessary precautions can be taken.
“I have instructed all Warisan leaders to keep a lookout and to help within their means so that no family is cut off from basic food supplies,” Shafie said in a Facebook post today.
His statement came after visiting the crash site of a Perodua Myvi that was washed away by strong currents at Jalan Kionsom Lama, Inanam Sabah around 6pm yesterday. A video depicting the incident has since gone viral.
The car was later discovered this morning at 7.20am about 200m from the spot it was swept away, according to the Sabah State Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre.
They also revealed that two male victims were involved in the incident namely 68-year-old Simon Sanga Tupe, who was driving, and his passenger, 30-year-old Juning.
Malaysiakini understands that both victims have been discovered and sent to a nearby hospital for an autopsy.
The crash site was visited by Shafie around 12pm today, where he conveyed his sympathies and condolences to the victims’ families.
“I sympathise with the incident of the car falling into the river due to a flash flood that occurred at Kampung Kionsom yesterday.
“My condolences are extended to the families of the late Simon Sanga and Juning on the tragedy that befell them,” he said. - Mkini
