Undi18 expands activism movement with UndiNegaraku

Malaysian youth movement Undi18 has launched a new activism movement called UndiNegaraku which aims to cultivate 10,000 youth leaders by 2023.

According to Undi18, the group's latest non-partisan offshoot aims to continue building upon the success of the group’s previous state-based campaigns such as UndiSarawak by establishing subsidiary groups in each state and looks to encourage youths to bring awareness to state-specific issues.

“By establishing a network of state chapters across Malaysia, UndiNegaraku provides youths with a unique avenue to learn about policy and activism from a non-partisan lens and serves as encouragement for youths to actively participate in socio-politics at a local and national level.

“UndiNegaraku aims to build a nationwide movement that empowers youths to reflect, embody and exemplify the values promulgated in the Rukun Negara.

“Hence, we are embarking on a mission to cultivate over 10,000 Malaysian democracy change-makers by 2023,” Undi18 said in a statement today.

Informed voters

Citing the 7.8 million voters who will soon be introduced into the electoral roll by 2023, the group said that there is a need for a larger platform for youths to engage with their communities and build a generation of informed voters.

“There is a need for a larger avenue for these youth change-makers to connect and engage with each other, to acquire support in starting and continuing projects in their own communities, and to contribute to nation-building.

“There is a need for a platform to build a generation of informed voters via voter education,” said Undi18.

UndiNegaraku is registered under the Youth Societies and Youth Development Act 2007.

In 2019, the constitutional amendment to allow youths in the country to vote at the age of 18 was unanimously passed in Parliament.

When then-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had presented the bill, he said the government expected some 7.8 million new voters in the electoral roll by 2023. - Mkini
