After Rafizi's salvo, Adam touts 'unity' factor

PKR Youth chief hopeful Adam Adli Abdul Halim has deflected barbs from PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli, who questioned the former's lack of experience in organising party resources.

Speaking at an event in Malacca yesterday, Adam implied that his greenhorn status in the party was, in fact, a good trait because should he be elected, he could get along with everyone.

"If you expect me (to do everything), I can't. We depend on all members, not just one leader. That's why ukhwah (camaraderie) is important," he said.

Adam said it was important that the youth wing choose a new leadership that could unite all factions within.

"We need a leader who can talk to all party members and not one who only cares about his own team," he added.

Adam and his allies are contesting the PKR Youth election under the Seangkatan banner, which does not have a key party figure as a patron, at least publicly.

His opponent Fahmi Zainol is part of the larger Ayuh Malaysia banner, led by Rafizi - one of the party's most prominent names.

In Ipoh on Sunday, Rafizi stumped for Fahmi, calling him a proven student leader with seven years of experience as a party leader in Penang.

Adam only joined PKR last September. The party leadership had waived a rule barring new members from taking part in the party election, thereby allowing Adam to participate in the upcoming party polls. Such waivers are not uncommon.

In his speech yesterday, Adam urged everyone participating in the PKR leadership election to maintain decorum and not resort to mudslinging.

"This election should not open another large wound for the party. We've seen enough. We've gone through several episodes.

"Our priority is what happens after our party's election. We need our party to convince not just our members but the people at large," he said.

PKR's party election will take place between May 13 and 22. The party practices a one-person-one-vote system for the top six positions in the central leadership council, youth wing and women's wing. - Mkini
