Covid-19 (April 28): 2,935 new cases, daily admissions at 16 month low

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 2,935 new daily Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total cumulative cases to 4,443,318.

Active cases currently stood at 53,777, down 52.5 percent compared to 14 days ago.

As of two days ago, the R-number has dropped to 0.70. A R-number of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 is decelerating.

Another 10 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which one was declared as "brought in dead".

Over the past week, an average of 9.4 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 21.0, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the downtrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 35,536 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

There have been 553 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 2,235 deaths last month and 770 deaths in February.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 1,071 deaths per 1 million population, and the fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

Penang, Selangor and Terengganu all reported two deaths each while Johor, Kedah, Malacca and Putrajaya reported one death each.

There are 1,385 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised of which 84 are in intensive care.

Yesterday, 476 Covid-19 patients were admitted. The number of daily Covid-19 admissions yesterday was the lowest since Dec 24, 2020 (16 months).

The highest number of admissions yesterday was recorded in Selangor (149) followed by Johor (121) and Sabah (55). - Mkini
