Why question us over peaceful assembly, PSM asks police

GEORGE TOWN: A sudden police investigation into a recent Workers Day rally by Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has surprised party leaders as they said police had been briefed two days beforehand.

PSM’s deputy chief S Arutchelvan said four people, including himself, are now required to give statements at the Dang Wangi police station on May 7 over the gathering.

He said the Workers Day rally was held in a peaceful setting at the Central Market, with about 150 people in attendance on April 23, including monitors from Suhakam, the human rights commission.

Arutchelvan said the organisers had given their full plans to the Dang Wangi district police chief on April 21.

“The gathering was incident-free and is an example of what a peaceful assembly should be. Police should stop lodging reports on cases just to be investigated by themselves. There are more serious crimes to investigate.

“Furthermore, we had engaged the police fully before the event was held,” he told FMT.

Arutchelvan said besides himself, organiser Kohila Yanasekaran, Subang PSM’s T Mohan Ellen and Suaram’s coordinator Wong Yan Ke were called in for questioning as well.

He said it is likely that the investigation would be under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

FMT has contacted the Dang Wangi police for comment. - FMT
