PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has retained the PKR presidency for the 2022-2024 term after being the only person nominated for the party’s top post.
This was announced by PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in a Facebook post today. He congratulated the Port Dickson MP for defending his position.
This is the second consecutive term that Anwar has won the post uncontested, after 2018 following his release from prison.
At the time, he had taken over the position from his wife and then former deputy prime minister, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
PKR will be holding its party elections from May 13 to 18, with Saifuddin and vice-president Rafizi Ramli vying to be Anwar’s deputy.
Meanwhile, there will be an 18-cornered fight for the four vice-president’s posts up for grabs, after PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin submitted his name at the last minute last night.
He will up against Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, current Wanita PKR chief Fuziah Salleh, Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil, current vice-president Chang Lih Kang and party organising secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
The others contesting are former Perak PKR chief Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, central leadership member Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, Alor Setar MP Chan Ming Kai, former Kapar MP G Manivannan, former Perak PKR deputy chairman MA Tinagaran, former Indera Mahkota MP Azan Ismail, former vice-president Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, former PKR Youth vice-president S Thiban, Sentosa assemblyman G Gunarajah, Chuah assemblyman Michael Yek and Bukit Selambau assemblyman Dr R Summugam. - FMT
