Complaint lodged to ROS over ‘ploy’ to deny PKR polls candidacy

A woman has lodged a complaint to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) claiming that she was sacked from PKR without her knowledge, thus depriving her of the opportunity to contest a divisional chief post in the ongoing party election.

The same woman had previously accused Sungai Siput MP S Kesavan of sexually harassing her and believes the latest move is a ploy to prevent her from contesting the election.

“I am very dissatisfied and heartbroken with how the dismissal of members is handled by division chiefs and the PKR central leadership committee, which is not in accordance with Article 9 of the party constitution,” she told Malaysiakini.

She was supposedly sacked in November 2020, but she claimed she was not issued any show-cause letter before her membership was nullified.

Moreover, she said the grounds for sacking her were not those listed in Part III of PKR’s party constitution.

“I was neither summoned by the party’s disciplinary bureau to defend myself nor allowed to make an appeal if I was found to be in the wrong,” she said.

The report was lodged at ROS’ headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday.

Post won uncontested

Part III of PKR constitution lays out the rules and requirements regarding party membership. Article 9 comes under Part III, and lays out how a member can be removed from the party.

Malaysiakini is unable to name the woman as the sexual harassment case is still being investigated by the police and a civil suit is pending in court. Kesavan had denied the allegations.

Kesavan, who is the incumbent Sungai Siput PKR division chief, has retained his post uncontested after two prospective challengers were barred from entering the race due to being supposedly sacked in 2020.

“I suspect this is a ploy to prevent me from contesting the post of Sungai Siput division chief. So, I urge the ROS to investigate my complaint,” said the woman.

“I also object to the nomination and election process for the Sungai Siput division chief, which was not conducted fairly and was schemed to deny me the opportunity to contest.”

The other would-be contender was A Vethamoorthy, who told Malaysiakini on Sunday that he was a PKR member since 2013, but was told he was no longer a member when he tried to register as a candidate contesting for the divisional chief post. - Mkini
