Cops arrest man who attacked foreign student after catcalling her

One of two men who attacked an international student after she used her mobile phone to record them catcalling her has been arrested.

Sentul district police headquarters chief Beh Eng Lai said the 32-year-old man was arrested at the Sri Aman people's housing project (PPR), Jinjang Utara in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, at 3.30pm yesterday.

"He had two past criminal records. His accomplice is still free and is being tracked down," Beh said.

The woman was with a friend outside Publika Shopping Gallery in Kuala Lumpur on April 21 when two men on a motorcycle catcalled her.

The 26-year-old student then used her mobile phone to record the incident.

The men then approached her in an apparent attempt to take her mobile phone, and a scuffle ensued.

The student claimed she was bitten on the arm and hit on the back with a stick.

The victim and her friend then fled to a nearby school, where a security guard opened a gate for them. Following this, the assailants sped off.

Beh said police have also seized the motorcycle used in the incident.

The case is being investigated under Sections 393 and 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and attempting to commit robbery.

If found guilty, the attackers can be imprisoned for up to seven years and one year for the respective offences and also be liable to a fine. - Mkini
