Cops probe alleged abuse at Cheras religious school

The police are currently looking into the case of a teacher who allegedly abused a standard five student at a Kafa (religion and religious duties) school in Cheras.

In a statement, Cheras district police chief Muhammad Idzam Jaafar said a preliminary investigation had found that the religious teacher allegedly caned the student, resulting in the student suffering from bruises and scratch marks.

“The student has received treatment at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

“While trying to complete the probe, the investigating officer in charge of the case had gone to the school but was informed that the teacher is currently on vacation,” Muhammad Idzam said.

In the police report made by the student’s father earlier this week, it stated that his son had asked his classmate who was sitting in front of him in class to take off his songkok as it was difficult for him to see what was written on the whiteboard.

This allegedly angered the teacher, who then caned the student five times, resulting in the injuries.

Investigations are still underway.

Lodge a complaint

According to a social media post sighted by Malaysiakini regarding the case, the family of the student had also reportedly attempted to lodge a complaint with the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi), but the school had allegedly tried to dissuade them as to not “tarnish the reputation of the school”.

The case is being investigated under section 324 of the Penal Code (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means).

It carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail or an unstipulated fine or caning or any two of the mentioned sentences. - Mkini
