Covid-19 (April 26): 3,361 new cases, 13 deaths

COVID-19 | The number of new daily Covid-19 cases continues to trend downwards with 3,361 fresh infections reported by the Health Ministry yesterday.

As of two days ago, the R-number has gone down to 0.73. A R-number of below 0.73 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was decelerating.

Active cases stood at 61,872, down 48.7 percent compared to 14 days ago.

Another 13 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which one was declared as "brought in dead".

Over the past week, an average of 10.1 people were reported to have died of Covid-19 daily, while the average for the past 30 days was 24.4, indicating that such deaths are on the downtrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 35,520 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

There have been 537 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 2,235 last month and 770 in February.

Selangor and Kuala Lumpur reported six deaths followed by Kedah (2), Perak (2), Malacca (1), Pahang (1) and Penang (1).

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 1,071 deaths per 1 million population, and the fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

There are 1,531 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised of which 101 are in intensive care.

The number of Covid-19 patients in ICU has gone up slightly since reaching an 18-month low on April 22 (89 patients). However, utilisation of ICU beds intended for Covid-19 patients remains very low at 13.4 percent.

There were 519 patients who were admitted due to Covid-19 yesterday - slightly higher than the day before - but the number of daily admissions is still trending downwards on a one-week basis.

The highest number of admissions yesterday was recorded in Selangor (190) followed by Sabah (70) and Johor (68). - Mkini
