Covid-19 (April 7): 11,994 new cases, 36 deaths

 

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 11,994 new Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, bringing total cumulative infections to 4,292,585.

Active cases stood at 157,572, down 36.2 percent compared to 14 days ago.

As of yesterday, the R-number was at 0.83. An R-number of less than 1.00 suggests that the spread of Covid-19 is decelerating.

None of the states or territories has an R-number of more than 1.00.

New cases according to states are as follows:

Another 36 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which nine were declared as "brought in dead".

Over the past week, an average of 35 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 61.5, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the downtrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 35,228 deaths have been attributed to the coronavirus.

There have been 245 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 2,235 deaths last month and 770 deaths in February.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 1,061 deaths per 1 million population, and the fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

Most of the new deaths were reported in Selangor (9) followed by Perak (5), Sarawak (5), Johor (4), Penang (4), Terengganu (2), Putrajaya (2), Malacca (1), Negeri Sembilan (1), Pahang (1), Sabah (1) and Kuala Lumpur (1).

Some 3,174 Covid-19 patients are in the hospital of which 197 are in intensive care.

The number of Covid-19 patients warded is the lowest since Feb 2. This year, the number of concurrently hospitalised Covid-19 patients peaked on March 11 at 8,857.
