DAP man held under Sedition Act over 'don't vote MIC' video released

Paloh DAP campaign worker S Murugan has been released on police bail after being detained under the Sedition Act on Monday (April 11).

Johor DAP vice-chairperson Sheikh Omar Ali said Murugan was released at 2pm this afternoon.

"We were made to understand that the case will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers before any decision is made.

"We also found that the case is related to a video with the message 'not to vote for MIC', which was shared by Murugan on his personal Facebook page. The 15-second clip was from another individual's TikTok account," he added.

The video was posted ahead of the Johor state election last month.

Training his guns at MIC, Sheikh Omar, who failed to defend the Paloh seat in the recent polls, said those in the BN component party should quit politics if they are unable to handle criticism.

"If you can't accept criticism, can't be reprimanded... just withdraw from the political stage.

“Do not victimise an ordinary person by using the Sedition Act," he added.

Earlier, Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy claimed MIC members lodged more than 12 police reports against Murugan.

Following Murugan's arrest, Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong called for the repeal of the draconian Sedition Act.

“An oppressive law that has no place in Malaysian democracy,” he said, adding that there are sufficient laws to deal with matters of freedom and free speech. - Mkini
