KUALA LUMPUR: The drainage and irrigation department (DID) says the drainage system was unable to cope after more than two hours of rain in Kuala Lumpur, resulting in the flash floods yesterday.

It was unable to hold the excess water and deal with the backflow problem, according to the DID.

This happened along several main roads in the city centre after heavy rainfall was recorded, DID director-general Nasir Md Noh said.

“The water level of Sungai Gombak at Jalan Tun Razak and Sungai Batu in Sentul was reported to have exceeded the danger level of 32.45m and 34.03m, respectively.

“These flash floods caused traffic congestion and damaged vehicles that became stranded.

“More than 50 houses along Jalan Kasipillay, Jalan Batu Bata, Segambut Bahagia and Segambut Dalam were flooded in 0.3m of water,” he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro.

Roads affected yesterday included Jalan Kuching, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim, Jalan Semantan, Jalan Segambut, Pintasan Segambut, Jalan Kinabalu (Bulatan Merdeka), Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah, Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar, Jalan Travers, Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Bulatan Dato Onn, Jalan Maarof (Bangsar), and Jalan Merdeka.

Nasir said all flood control infrastructure under the Federal Territories DID were operated in accordance with the department’s SOPs.

The Smart Mode 2 Diversion (for the SMART Tunnel) was activated at 3.40pm, while the Keroh Diversion and Gombak Diversion channels were activated at 3.50pm and 4.12pm, respectively, to draw away excess water.

“Residents in low-lying areas are advised to be more cautious and stay vigilant during heavy rain.

“Members of the public are requested to be on alert to the sound of flood warning sirens and monitor weather conditions.

“Should heavy rainfall and high tide happen concurrently, residents have to be ready to move to safer areas and follow the orders given by the authorities,” he added. - FMT
