Fahmi Reza released after two days in police lock-up

Graphic artist Fahmi Reza has been released after spending two days in a police lock-up while cops investigated him over an artwork they deemed seditious.

Fahmi, in a Facebook post this morning, said he was released from the Dangi Wangi district police headquarters which he sarcastically described as a "hotel stay".

"I've checked out from my two days, one night Dang Wangi Hotel stay package, courtesy of Mojo Jojo.

"Great location, perfect vibes and amazing hospitality. Food was tasty, complete with complimentary sahur and iftar sent to my room. Would love to return in the future," he said.

Fahmi was arrested on Thursday (April 14) under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 over a cartoon he drew of Mojo Jojo, the main villain in the cartoon The Powerpuff Girls.

Authorities took issue with the cartoon villain - a monkey with a green face - as Fahmi drew him in what appeared to be royalty clothing.

Three years imprisonment

Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948 concerns the offence of committing acts with seditious tendencies. It carries a punishment of up to three years imprisonment, an RM5,000 fine or both for the first offence.

Offenders are liable to up to five years imprisonment for subsequent offences.

Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 concerns the improper use of network facilities to make an obscene posting with the intent to annoy another person.

It carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or up to a year in jail or both. - Mkini
