Foreign Ministry thanks those who tried to save Nagaenthran

The Foreign Ministry today expressed gratitude to those who tried to save the life of a Malaysian man, Nagaenthran Dharmalingam, who was executed in Singapore this morning over drug offence charges.

It also expressed thanks to parties who advocated for the abolition of the death penalty.

“The Foreign Ministry thanks all organisations, including non-government organisations, who worked to ensure the death penalty against Nagaethran was commuted, and other initiatives to abolish the death penalty,” it said in a statement.

Expressing condolences to the intellectually disabled man’s family, the ministry said the Malaysian government had as late as this week tried to persuade the Singapore government to commute the sentence.

In letters from Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, Putrajaya had also offered to discuss a programme to move inmates to Malaysia, it said.

This was the second letter sent by the duo to Singapore on the matter, and followed one from the Agong to the Singapore President, seeking clemency for Nagaenthran.

Nagaenthran, 34, was on death row for more than a decade after being found guilty of trafficking 55g of heroin into Singapore.

His mother yesterday failed in a last-ditch legal challenge to seek clemency in the high-profile case, which attracted international calls for clemency.

Like Singapore, Malaysia also imposes the death penalty for drug trafficking.

Under Pakatan Harapan, the cabinet agreed to abolish the death penalty. - Mkini
