KOTA KINABALU: Strategic public assets in Sabah should not face power or water supply shortages, said Kota Kinabalu member of parliament Chan Foong Hin.
He said the power outage at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here yesterday had forced at least one surgery to be stopped midway pending transfer to another hospital.
Apart from the incident, Chan also said the hospital had also suffered leaks and experienced floodings.
In 2019, a heavy downpour had caused chaos at the same hospital here after leaks appeared in multiple locations including one operating room being used for surgery while the exterior was also flooded.
"We have also heard of international airports in Kota Kinabalu that have experienced power outages, industrial parks and businesses facing shortage of water supply.
"The purpose of having these assets in the first place is to achieve certain national strategic aims such as access to transportation, health, national security - all of which goes to the basic welfare of the people," he said in a statement.
Chan added that by allowing public assets to suffer from shortages for a period of time showed incompetency and indifferences towards the basic welfare of the people. - NST
