Loke: No change, Anwar still Harapan's PM candidate

As far as DAP is concerned, there is no change to the decision that Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim will be the coalition's candidate for prime minister, said its secretary-general, Anthony Loke.

According to a report by the Malay Mail, Loke (above) was commenting on the announcements by Umno that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob would be its prime ministerial candidate, which was quickly followed by Bersatu reaffirming that former premier Muhyiddin Yassin would be its choice for the top job.

“For DAP, definitely we are in Harapan, whatever Harapan's decision must be made together, in consensus.

"We decided a long time ago. That’s a standing decision. As long as there’s no new decision, then the decision still stands,” said Loke when asked whether the PKR president was still the choice to lead the coalition into the next general election.

Anwar was the prime minister in waiting after the last election as part of an agreement under which Dr Mahathir Mohamad was supposed to hand over the premiership.

However, the latter set about trying to form a unity government and eventually unilaterally resigned leading to the collapse of the Harapan administration.

Anwar's credibility has since taken a heavy hit after he claimed to have the support of a strong, formidable majority of MPs, only to fall short.

PKR has also suffered repeated drubbings in state elections, picking up a total of only three seats in the Sabah, Malacca, Sarawak and Johor polls.

Yesterday, Bersatu supreme council member Razali Idris said his party would propose its president Muhyiddin as the prime minister if Perikatan Nasional (PN) wins the next general election.

Prior to that, on April 14, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan announced that the party's supreme council has agreed to name Ismail Sabri, who is party vice-president, as the prime minister if BN wins. - Mkini
