MMA reminds symptomatic close contacts to be responsible, self-test

The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has reminded the public to act responsibly when they find themselves symptomatic or positive for Covid-19 as the nation transitions into the endemic phase.

Its president Dr Koh Kar Chai said that while there have been recent changes to standard operating procedures (SOP) for asymptomatic close contacts, individuals should still act responsibly.

“While there is no longer a requirement for asymptomatic close contacts to undergo quarantine, we hope symptomatic close contacts will not skip testing.

“MMA reminds close contacts to do the responsible thing and get tested if there are symptoms of Covid-19.

“If you have tested positive, report it on the MySejahtera app so that your condition can be assessed and managed,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced that Covid-19 close contacts who do not display symptoms of the disease will no longer need to quarantine, including the unvaccinated.

Self-management is key

Koh said that Malaysia’s successful transition to endemicity hinges on how well Covid-19 is self-managed.

“We may be transitioning to endemicity but our success will depend on how well we self-manage Covid-19 hence it is important to still carry out these steps.

“On the other hand, if you have symptoms and have self-tested negative, it would be advisable to seek medical attention to rule out other possible illnesses,” he added.

Prior to this, asymptomatic close contacts who already received a booster shot were exempted from quarantine but must conduct a self-test on day one and day three after being notified of the exposure.

Boosted close contacts with symptoms previously needed to quarantine for five days and conduct a self-test, while fully vaccinated individuals had to quarantine for five days regardless of symptoms and conduct a self-test if symptoms do arise. - Mkini
