Namewee fights to restore hacked YouTube account with 1.4b views

Controversial rapper Namewee is fighting to restore his YouTube channel, which fell prey to hackers, resulting in hundreds of his videos disappearing overnight.

Lamenting on Facebook, he said his channel which he has operated for 13 years, had been hacked by someone in Russia.

He also took the opportunity to voice his support for Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

The rapper’s Taiwanese agent told The Taipei Times that his management team had reached out to YouTube for assistance in restoring the music videos and related comments after they vanished overnight and the title of his channel changed from “Namewee” to something else in Russian.

Prior to the hacking, his channel had recorded 3.27 million subscribers and 1,432,644,663 views.

Namewee has had a string of flashpoints in his career that include controversial songs such as ‘Negarakuku’ (2007), ‘Oh My God’ (2016), ‘Like A Dog’ (2018) as well as the movie ‘Babi’ (2020).

Most recently, in October last year, he scored his biggest hit with ‘Fragile’, a saccharine duet in Mandarin with Australian Kimberley Chen that pokes fun at Beijing and its supporters among the Chinese diaspora who readily accept China's official media line.

Despite the video and song being banned from music streaming services in China, it was viewed by millions.

A native of Muar, Johor, Namewee is a graduate of Taiwan’s Ming Chuan University and has been nominated three times for best Mandarin male singer at Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards. - Mkini
