SEREMBAN: A 44-second video clip making the rounds showing children riding “basikal lajak” dangerously is an old recording from 2019, police said today.
Seremban district police chief Nanda Maarof said a check showed that the incident was believed to have occurred at about 1pm in September 2019 between Km39 and Km40 on the Kajang-Seremban highway.
“The incident happened near the entrance towards Ampangan,” he said. The video clip showed about 10 children riding “basikal lajak” while performing dangerous stunts.
“Basikal lajak” are illegally modified, cut-down bicycles without brakes or lamps. They were in the news recently after a clerk was jailed after she collided with a group of teenagers on the modified bicycles late at night in Johor in 2017.
Nanda said the Seremban traffic police often conducted enforcement and monitoring at the location of basikal lajak activities “and found that these activities have decreased”.
The police would take stern action on traffic offences, including basikal lajak activities. He said road traffic regulations called for bicycles to have front and rear lights that can be seen within a reasonable distance.
No one may ride a bicycle on the road unless it is equipped with brakes that operate separately on both tyres, and with bells.
Nanda said legal action could also be taken against parents and guardians under the Child Act for leaving their children without reasonable supervision, which could result in a fine of up to RM20,000, five years’ jail, or both. - FMT
