PETALING JAYA: A RM5 billion federal fund meant for road repairs in states will now be expanded to include damage caused by floods, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.
He said the repair scope would be expanded to cover damages to bridges, drains, culverts and slopes on state roads.
Ismail said states could apply for the funding through the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris).
He said this included damage to local council roads and roads under agricultural authorities.
“The federal government is concerned about states affected by the floods caused by the northeastern monsoon last year and this year.
“We have agreed to relook the allocations under Marris to expand the scope of repairs to benefit the states in a better way.
“The federal government is ready to amend the guidelines and relevant laws to expand the scope of the Marris allocations,” he said in a statement.
Marris is the federal government system of granting annual payments for maintenance of state roads, as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution.
According to an earlier reply given in Parliament, these funds for maintenance are given after calculating the average cost of maintaining a road and the length of state roads.
States must register their roads into the Marris system to qualify for these payouts. - FMT
