Singer seeks Prisons Dept's permission for access to psychiatrist

Singer Yasin Sulaiman's legal counsel and his family are seeking the Prisons Department's permission to allow the artiste, who suffers from chronic bipolar disorder, access to psychiatric specialists.

According to a media report, lawyer Yusmadi Yusoff is working to get Yasin's medical record that would show his history of psychiatric treatments.

He is also writing to the director of Sungai Buloh Prison to get the authority's attention to Yasin's (above) mental health issue.

"InshaAllah, I will write an official letter to the Sungai Buloh Prison director to seek the prison's attention (to Yasin's case).

"The magistrate has also ordered authorities to provide treatment to Yasin. Alhamdulillah, Yasin has been treated well in the prison and I thank the officers there.

"However, I will still try to get all the treatment he needs as soon as possible," Yusmadi said, as quoted by Astro Awani.

Yasin, 46, who is also a composer, was charged with trafficking cannabis at his condominium in Kota Damansara, Selangor last month, an offence that carries the mandatory death penalty if found guilty.

In his plea for bail, Yasin had told the court he feared detention could exacerbate his chronic bipolar disorder.

However, he was denied bail and has been kept in prison since.

The charge that Yasin is facing under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act is an unbailable offence.

Yusmadi reportedly said that the legal team representing Yasin in his trial is in the process of getting medical records from Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz in Cheras, where he had been admitted for over two weeks in 2009. - Mkini
