A foreign student, who was walking with her friend outside the Publika Shopping Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, was assaulted when she used her mobile phone to record two men on a motorcycle who catcalled her.
In an Instagram post, the 26-year-old student said the incident happened at about 8.50pm last night.
Upon noticing that their actions were being recorded, the men approached the pair and a scuffle erupted.
The student claimed she was bitten on the arm and hit on the back with a stick.
The victim and her friend then fled to a nearby school where a security guard opened a gate for them. Following this, the assailants sped off.
The victim, who posted her ordeal to caution others, said one of the men had run towards them. While her friend managed to escape, she, however, failed to do so.
The student later lodged a police report and a manhunt has been launched for the two suspects who were spotted riding a motorcycle with the number plate WB 9352P.
Attempted robbery
In a statement this afternoon, Sentul district police chief Beh Eng Lai said the suspect who approached the complainant and her friend had attempted to snatch the mobile phone.
He said when the complainant recorded their actions, the men turned around and rode towards them.
“The suspect riding the motorcycle got off and approached the complainant. He attempted to steal her mobile phone but failed,” he added.
The case is being investigated under Sections 393 and 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and attempting to commit robbery.
If found guilty, the pair can be imprisoned for up to seven years and one year for the respective offences and also be liable to a fine.
Police have also asked for the cooperation of the public in their search for the two suspects.
