Submarine deal: As France ramps up probe, Anwar asks if Malaysia will follow suit

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has urged Putrajaya to state its position on the escalation of a French corruption probe on the sale of submarines to Malaysia in 2002.

In a statement today, Anwar said Putrajaya must declare whether those involved in the matter will be brought to justice in Malaysia.

"This case is taking place in Paris, France. However, the Malaysian authorities seem to be taking this lightly," he added.

Malaysia acquired three submarines in 2002 - two scorpene-class submarines and one used Agosta-class submarine from DCN International (DNCI).

At the time, the defence minister was Najib Abdul Razak. DCNI is currently the owner of Thales Group.

Yesterday, Thales Group confirmed that it has been under formal investigation by the French authorities since Jan 18. The preliminary probe began in March 2010.

Thales Group told Reuters that it "strongly contests" the allegations against its subsidiaries.

Allegations of impropriety involving French and Malaysian elements first emerged after human rights group Suaram lodged a complaint with the French courts in 2009 and 2010.

Two Malaysian companies - Perimekar Sdn Bhd and Terasasi Sdn Bhd - were alleged to have received commissions from DCNI as part of the deal. - Mkini
