Taxi licences reopened for application from April 18

An initial quota of 1,000 licences has been set for this year, says transport minister Wee Ka Siong.

KUALA LUMPUR: Applications for taxi and rental car licences will be reopened to individuals in business as sole proprietors or partners from April 18 to June 30.

Transport minister Wee Ka Siong said the reopening came in response to requests from the public and existing taxi drivers who wished to have their own taxi licence.

Applications have been frozen since 2016.

Wee said a quota of 1,000 licences was set for this year. The land transport agency Apad will analyse all applications received after the deadline and it would consider an appropriate additional quota if the number of eligible applications exceeded the initial quota.

Apad had abolished a requirement of one to three years’ experience in driving a taxi or rental. However, other requirements previously imposed remained to ensure that passengers received the best service. - FMT
