PETALING JAYA: A 16-year-old girl has been arrested by the police on suspicion of having slashed the throat of an e-hailing driver over a RM400 fare for a journey from Tangkak, Johor, to Kuala Lumpur.

Sentul district police chief Beh Eng Lai said the driver, aged 63, had picked up the female passenger at Sagil in Tangkak and had driven her to Kovil Hilir on Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur. The distance is about 164km by road.

Upon arrival, the driver told the passenger that the fare was RM400 but the girl refused to pay, not having the money. The driver then decided to take her to the nearest police station.

“Out of fear, the suspect then slashed the (driver’s) throat with a penknife and later ran away, leaving it in the car,” Beh said. The driver then drove to Sentul police headquarters for help and was sent to hospital in an ambulance.

A report was lodged on April 13 at around 2.55am and the suspect was arrested at 4.55pm today. A mobile phone was confiscated.

Beh said the teenager did not have a criminal record. The case is being investigated for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon, an offence which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ jail, fine or whipping. - FMT
