PUTRAJAYA: Khairy Jamaluddin has urged Malaysians not to be too eager to push for loosened Covid-19 restrictions, warning that other countries which have done so have seen spikes in infections.
Stating that the decreasing number of daily cases, hospital admissions, ICU admissions and the death rate has given the government confidence to loosen restrictions, Khairy hoped that the public would not be “careless” and neglect Covid-19 SOPs.
The country started its transition into the endemic phase of Covid-19 on April 1, which has seen the reopening of borders and the lifting of several restrictions, including businesses resuming pre-pandemic hours. There has also been talk of lifting the face mask rule for outdoor use.
“There are countries who thought they have won, but we look at them now, and their cases are rapidly rising. We don’t want to be like those countries,” Khairy said at an event here.
“They loosened all restrictions, but in the end, they are faced with wave after wave of new infections.
“Let us not make that same mistake.”
Khairy did not make any mention of the countries he was referring to.
This comes after Khairy had on Monday said he would provide an update on the SOPs for the Hari Raya celebrations next week.
The government has allowed Malaysians to “balik kampung” to celebrate Hari Raya this year, after two years of not being able to do so because of various movement control orders to curb the spread of Covid-19. - FMT
