Where are the mitigation measures, group, netizens ask as floods hit KL again

PETALING JAYA: The government and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) should stop sloganeering and do something effective against the frequent floods in the city, the Save KL Coalition (SKL) said.

Its chairman M Ali asked if DBKL had indeed done studies on flood mitigation as claimed.

Yesterday, several areas in Kuala Lumpur, including Jalan Travers, Jalan Kuching and Jalan Ampang, were inundated by floodwaters.

Referring to news reports about DBKL conducting studies to mitigate or cope with flash floods in Kuala Lumpur from 2020 until 2022, Ali asked: “If they have done studies on flood prevention, why haven’t these been shared with the public by uploading it on the DBKL website?”

He noted that DBKL was, after all, using public funds for these studies and mitigation measures.

“In fact, at a briefing some years ago on the present flood mitigation initiative at the Taman Tasik Perdana KL site, we asked if that initiative would include the roads from Jalan Travers to Jalan Rakyat or Jalan Mahameru, but we were informed it was out of the scope of the plan,” he said.

Saying the government was always sloganeering about “transparency” and “openness”, he added: “But sloganeering is not enough, there must be deliverables.”

He said DBKL should give serious thought to having constant engagement with the public

Meanwhile, people have taken to social media to call out DBKL on its claims of conducting studies to mitigate or cope with flash floods in Kuala Lumpur.

Twitter user @iamkanahraf questioned the progress of meetings to upgrade KL’s flood mitigation and warning systems which were mentioned by federal territories deputy minister Jalaluddin Alias in March.

@blurredfrank said the flash floods were occurring more frequently but DBKL had not done anything to prevent these floods.

“Is DBKL not going to take action regarding these floods?” asked @bijubtrbjokin.
