Kemaman latest district to be hit by floods

KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu has become the latest state to be hit by floods when two temporary flood relief centres (PPS) had to be opened in the district of Kemaman.

As of 8am today, there are 28 victims from nine families that have been moved to the PPS at Sekolah Kebangsaan Lembah Jabor and the Dewan Orang Ramai Kampung Air Putih.

Based on reports from the Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) secretariat, PPS SK Lembah Jabor which was opened at midnight is housing 25 victims from eight families.

The Dewan Orang Ramai Kampung Air Putih was also activated to shelter three victims from a family.

At present, the weather conditions are cloudy over most areas in the state.

Meanwhile, the water level at most main rivers in Terengganu has shown an upward trend following the uncertain weather at the moment.

Based on the Drainage and Irrigation Department's (DID) Public Flood Information website, one river each has gone over the danger and warning level while two more have gone over the cautionary level.

As of 8am today, Sungai Tebak at Jambatan Tebak in Kemaman has gone over the danger level with a reading of 18.80m (metres) compared to a normal level of 15m.

In Hulu Terengganu, Sungai Telemong in Kuala Ping recorded a reading of 19.21m which is above the cautionary level.

Two other rivers that have recorded readings above the cautionary level are Sungai Dungun at Jambatan Jerangau, Dungun and Sungai Kemaman at Jambatan Air Putih in Kemaman as each have a water level reading of 11.35m and 12.92m respectively.

Earlier, unexpected floods that hit the state of Terengganu beginning Nov 18 affected eight districts and saw more than 40,000 people becoming victims. - NST
