Anwar declared assets for GE15, PKR man tells Dr M

Dr Mahathir Mohamad had challenged Anwar Ibrahim to declare the wealth the latter had amassed during his tenure as deputy prime minister and finance minister.

PETALING JAYA: A PKR leader has defended Anwar Ibrahim from Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s calls for the prime minister to declare the wealth he had amassed when he was a deputy prime minister and finance minister.

PKR communications director Lee Chean Chung pointed out that Anwar, as well as the party’s other candidates, had declared their assets in November last year, prior to the 15th general election (GE15).

Lee also quipped that Mahathir seemed to have become Perikatan Nasional’s de facto leader, after Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu joined calls for Anwar to reveal the source of his assets.

“It seems that Bersatu is starting to bow to the Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) chairman (Mahathir).

“PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang signed the ‘Malay Proclamation’. Now, Faizal, as a senior Bersatu leader, is also backing Mahathir,” he said in a statement.

On Monday, Mahathir said Anwar had been accused of helping his own cronies too, when he was in the Cabinet in the 1990s.

He challenged the PKR president to declare the wealth that he had amassed during his tenure as deputy prime minister and finance minister.

Mahathir said this in response to Anwar’s call to Malay leaders and tycoons, whom the latter accused of amassing massive wealth over the years, to share their wealth with the Malay populace that they claimed to champion.

Anwar served as deputy prime minister, under Mahathir’s administration, from 1993 to 1998, and as finance minister from 1991 to 1998.

Mahathir recently filed a RM150 million libel suit against Anwar over the latter’s claims the former prime minister had enriched himself and his family.

Mahathir said the allegations had eroded his status as a statesman and former prime minister. - FMT
