PETALING JAYA: The CEO of Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) high-performance centre has resigned after the country’s 3-0 loss to the Philippines in the quarter-finals of the women’s team event at the SEA Games in Cambodia on Monday.

“The Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) can confirm today that in taking full responsibility and accountability of the lack of recent results involving Malaysian players, Michelle Chai has offered and tendered her resignation as chief executive officer of ABM,” said BAM in a Facebook post.

Malaysia started badly against the Philippines when world No 184 Mikaela Joy De Guzman beat Tan Zhing Yi 24-22, 21-18 in the first match of their last-eight encounter.

The Philippines extended their lead through their pairing of Alyssa Ysabel Leonardo-Thea Marie Pomar, who defeated Malaysia’s Low Yeen Yuan-Valeree Siow 22-20, 19-21, 24-22.

Bianca Ysabel Carlos then went past Siti Nurshuhaini Azman 21-16, 21-18 to seal the win.

Earlier today, Chai told a press conference that the result against the Philippines was “not acceptable”, adding that she took “full responsibility and accountability” for it.

The team fell 3-1 to hosts Vietnam in the same stage of the competition at the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam. - FMT
