KUALA LUMPUR: When passers-by at a shopping centre here received flowers from a stranger, they could not help but smile at the sweet gesture.
They later learnt a sorrowful story of love and loss.
Twitter user @acapbad recounted his encounter with a man dressed in a baju Melayu giving out free flowers to patrons, including his wife, at IPC Mutiara Damansara recently.
The couple then found a heart-breaking note written on a piece of paper attached to the flower.
"Happy Mother's Day. All the memories come back, but she never does. In loving memory of Norehan, gone too soon," the note read.
It was revealed that Norehan had died due to cancer.
"The note hit us personally because my wife had just lost her father to cancer last September," he added.
The tweet went viral on Sunday and netizens shared their grief over losing someone due to the illness.
"I lost my mother to cancer too. I miss her," said Aida.
"My late mother's name was Norehan. I lost her to cancer nine years ago. Seeing this post affects me deeply," commented Luqman.
"I'm sending hugs to the person. I lost my sister to cancer two years ago, and tomorrow will be the second anniversary of her death," said Nura.
"Losing someone we love is painful, and losing them to cancer is even more painful. I lost my beloved cousin to cancer a few years ago and it still eats me up inside. She was like a sister to me, especially since I am an only child," said another user.
Leah, who is Norehan's daughter, also commented on the tweet: "Hi, hopefully I can bring joy to you and your wife. I didn't mean to make you sad, I'm sorry."
She said every year on Mother's Day, together with her friends, she would give out free flowers.
"If it's not for Covid, this year should have been the 11th year. We took a break (from giving out free flowers) for two years."
She said she lost her mother when she was in school.
"Every Mother's Day and also on her birthday, I would surprise my late mother with flowers.
"Now, with the blessings I have received, I continue the tradition because my mother is no longer here. So, I give flowers to all the mothers.
"Thank you for the prayers, and I wish everyone a happy day ahead," she said. - NST
