Malaysia on Tuesday welcomed the decision by the Arab League to allow Syria to participate in the organisation’s activities after a 12-year hiatus, said the Foreign Ministry.
The ministry said the decision reached at the Extraordinary Meeting of Arab League’s Foreign Ministers in Cairo on Sunday is a constructive step for a conducive environment towards the betterment of life for the people in Syria as well as for the enhancement of peace, security, and stability in the region.
“Malaysia remains in solidarity with the people of Syria and will continue to support all efforts towards finding a lasting and peaceful resolution to the Syrian crisis,” the ministry said in a statement.
According to media reports, Arab nations agreed to reinstate Syria’s membership in the Arab League after being suspended for 12 years as ties with Damascus were being normalised.
The decision to reinstate Syria’s membership came ahead of the annual Arab summit in Saudi Arabia on May 19.
Syria was removed from the Arab League after the Bashar al-Assad regime’s brutal crackdown on protesters in March 2011 spiralled the country into a civil war.
Hundreds of thousands of people were killed and millions were displaced in Syria since.
