BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been urged to focus on component parties within his coalition and not other political partners.
In a statement today, MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon said Zahid must be cautious when speaking about cooperation between BN and Pakatan Harapan.
"As the BN chairperson, he should look after the interests of BN component parties, not Harapan and especially DAP.
"Cooperation between BN and Harapan must be reciprocal and benefit both," said Chong.
He also implied that Zahid had recently said something which misrepresented the MCA.
"Any position held by MCA must be announced by our leaders, specifically the MCA president, and not others," said Zahid.
Chong is believed to have been responding to Zahid’s call for BN supporters to back Harapan, including their arch nemesis DAP, in the upcoming six-state elections.
MCA's role in the upcoming six-state election is unclear. They do not hold any seats in those six states.
Speaking to reporters in Machang, Kelantan yesterday, Zahid said Umno supporters should back Harapan candidates, just as how they have backed MCA and MIC candidates in the past.
Earlier, DAP national publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching had urged the party's supporters to back Umno candidates in the upcoming six state elections.
She urged party members to put aside their past differences to ensure that the unity government can continue to work together.
Similar calls were made by Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan on Friday. - Mkini
