MP claims hydrant used with permission, Kelantan fire chief says otherwise

Rantau Panjang MP Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff has denied "stealing" water from fire hydrants - saying she had approval from the Fire and Rescue Department as well as Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB).

However, Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department chief Zainal Madasin said there was no record of her asking permission.

Earlier today, Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming said Siti Zailah was being probed for misusing fire hydrants.

This was after several of the PAS lawmaker’s Facebook postings last month showed her observing how water from a fire hydrant was channelled into a tanker that distributed free water supply for her constituents during a shortage.

Following the backlash, Siti Zailah posted this afternoon that both AKSB and the Rantau Panjang Fire and Rescue Station aided her efforts.

"The issue of water theft does not arise, we helped the people who were in dire need of water.

"The water is AKSB's, and we had its permission. The use of a fire hydrant was also with the permission and knowledge of the Rantau Panjang Fire and Rescue Station," she said.

The post included photos of her observing firefighters in uniform helping to pump water from a fire hydrant into a water tank on the back of a truck.

She thanked the Fire and Rescue Department and other agencies involved.

Report lodged

However, Zainal was reportedly not satisfied with her explanation.

"We did not get any application from YB (Siti Zailah) to take water from a fire hydrant, I can honestly say.

"There was no letter, not one word asking permission from us.

"I have also contacted the AKSB managing director (Nazmi Ghazali Azmi) and he told me he didn't get any request either," he told Malaysiakini.

They had filed a report on the matter for further investigation, Zainal added. - Mkini
