PETALING JAYA: A PAS leader hopes the Anwar Ibrahim-led government will continue the efforts of the previous administration to resolve the issue of clean water supply in Kelantan.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who was the environment and water minister in Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Cabinet, said the previous administration had several plans to resolve the issue, such as a reservoir project and the replacement of pipes in Kelantan.
“I had already approved a large-scale water reservoir project in Machang, with a capacity of 500 million litres per day.
“The state government had already allocated 1,000 acres of land (for it),” he told FMT.
He had said in May last year the construction of a RM1.3 billion water reservoir in Machang would resolve Kelantan’s water woes.
Tuan Ibrahim said there had also been a plan to replace water pipes. However, the cost was estimated to be RM3 billion per state, which he said the Kelantan government could not afford.
The Kubang Kerian MP said the problem could be resolved if the federal government allocated RM2 billion a year to the state’s water operator to replace equipment.
He said the state’s water operator did not want to increase tariffs as it would anger the people.
“I sympathise with them. I have met them and understand their predicament. They have no money to replace equipment as it costs millions,” he said. - FMT
