The Health Ministry has issued 14,872 offence notices for those smoking in prohibited places totalling RM3.7 million in fines up to April this year so far.
Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said this was the result of 5,028 operations that were carried out in the same period.
Meanwhile, a total of 30,648 offence notices were issued with a cumulative value of RM7.6 million in fines for the year 2022 over the course of 12,773 operations.
“The Health Ministry is aware and takes seriously the issue of complaints about smoking offences in prohibited places, especially in eateries, which has become more common recently and has gone viral on social media.
“Among the steps taken by the Health Ministry is to increase smoking ban enforcement activities, carried out periodically under the Tobacco Product Control Regulation 2004 in all states across the country,” Zaliha said in a written parliamentary reply dated May 23, 2023.
She was responding to a question from Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman who had asked the minister to state enforcement steps taken with regard to the smoking ban in eateries following complaints on social media about the matter.
Zaliha added that three joint operations with other enforcement agencies such as the police have been planned for May in Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor, and will be continued in other states. - Mkini
