Stateless orphan Yusri to get birth cert

The future is looking bright for 8-year-old Muhammad Yusri, who after being left orphaned and stateless in April, is set to get his birth certificate on Tuesday.

The National Registration Department (NRD) will be handing over the documentation at his family home in Port Dickson, as part of its Menyemai Kasih Rakyat (Mekar) programme.

Yusri's adoptive mother, who only wished to be known as Haslinda, said she and her family were grateful for the development.

"Alhamdulillah (Thank God), throughout the process our dealings were made easy with the help of NRD officers.

"What is important now is for me to register Yusri for school, give him an education, and focus on raising him as one of his own," the 48-year-old told Malaysiakini.

This news portal had previously highlighted Yusri's case in a report last month.

His Malaysian father and Indonesian mother did not register their marriage and Yusri - who was born at home - did not have his birth properly registered either.

Because of this, Yusri's birth certificate is not likely to confer citizenship on the boy, but will allow him access to public schools, and allow his adoptive family to initiate the process of getting him citizenship.

His mother passed away a year ago, while his father died of a heart attack in April.

Yusri was then taken in by Haslinda, who was previously married to the boy's father and had three children with him now aged 14 to 24. - Mkini
