Gerakan president Dominic Lau is facing further resistance from PAS members in Penang against him contesting in “Malay” seats.
Bayan Lepas PAS members staged a protest against the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leader, threatening to boycott him if he contests the Bayan Lepas seat.
Kosmo! reported that branch leaders issued a statement saying Bayan Lepas has been a PAS seat since the 12th general election and that voters there want a Malay candidate.
“We issue a stern warning to Lau, if he remains firm in contesting a Malay seat, we together with the whole machinery will boycott nomination day and shut down the PAS operation rooms in Bayan Lepas.
“We will ensure Gerakan’s defeat if these demands are not met.
“Don’t play with fire unless you want to get burned,” they said.
The last part of the statement is similar to one issued by Tasek Gelugor PAS Youth on Monday, also warning Lau to keep out of Malay seats.
Balik Pulau PAS Youth also issued a warning on Facebook against Lau contesting in Bayan Lepas.
“Don’t muddy the situation and the people’s momentum with PN now with unwise actions by contesting in a Malay-majority seat,” said Balik Pulau PAS Youth chief Mohamad Razis Abdul Rahman.
Bayan Lepas is one of three state seats under the Balik Pulau parliamentary constituency.
The seat was won by Amanah in the 2018 general election.
The protest against Lau comes hours before PN is set to announce its candidates for Penang tonight. - Mkini
