Chong Eng rues being axed, says group effort behind DAP's success

DAP Women chief Chong Eng has expressed regret over the decision to drop her as a candidate for the upcoming state election in Penang.

However, the 66-year-old politician, who is the incumbent for Padang Lalang, urged voters to back Pakatan Harapan candidates in the polls for the six states.

On the same note, she pointed out that DAP’s success was the collective sweat and toil of numerous individuals.

“It takes a group effort and many people’s hard work over the years for DAP, which is part of Harapan, to reap the fruits today.

“We should continue to progress for the benefit of Malaysians made up of different ethnic groups, men and women, young and old,” she said in a statement this afternoon.

Chong, who described this as a turning point, also revealed that she has a plan to uplift more women.

“I regret not contesting in the state election this round. This is a turning point for me in my political career since 1995 as the sole opposition in the Penang state assembly.

“I’m still healthy and my children are grown up. I have more time and energy to serve and contribute.

“I have a five-year plan drawn up to help more women to break the hidden glass ceiling at the decision-making level and do more for women in rural areas for other states to emulate,” she added.

Apart from Chong, DAP also dropped another veteran, P Ramasamy, who is the incumbent for Perai and served as Penang’s deputy chief minister.

Yesterday, Penang DAP announced its list of candidates, which included 10 incumbents and seven fresh faces.

Earlier today, one of the dropped incumbents Satees Muniandy fired a scathing salvo, criticising the dangers of an "emperor" to the state and its people. - Mkini
