Cops record 12 statements so far in Siti Kasim's car bomb probe

Police have recorded 12 statements as part of their ongoing investigations on two improvised explosive devices found under lawyer-activist Siti Kasim's car last week.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said statements recorded so far included Siti as the victim, police personnel, a mechanic who inspected her car, the car workshop owner, an Orang Asli witness and a Rela member.

"We have also reviewed security camera footage in all locations where the victim said she had gone to.

"We are in the process of identifying the suspect," said Ayob during a press conference after a function in Bukit Aman this morning.

The bomb was found attached to the undercarriage of Siti's car when she sent it for servicing at a workshop in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

Asked for comments that linked the bomb to reactions against alleged Islamophobia, Ayob said police did not receive any reports of other threats made against Siti before the bomb was discovered.

"We will wait for the full report, and then maybe we can identify the suspect," he said.

18 reports on The 1975

Meanwhile, Ayob said police had received 18 reports in relation to UK band The 1975’s frontman Matt Healy's stage act last Friday - performing while holding what is believed to be a bottle of alcohol, before kissing a male guitarist.

"Eight of the reports were lodged in Selangor and 10 in other states.

"We have recorded 13 statements. Six from complainants, one from the organiser, and six from Puspal, the regulatory agency," said Ayob who noted how there are parties that questioned police's alleged failure to act swiftly against the band and Healy.

"The incident happened on July 21 at around 11.30pm. We were informed that after the incident, the show was cancelled and The 1975 left Malaysia at 5.30am the next day.

"A police report was lodged on July 22 at 2pm. So we did not have the time to act," said Ayob.

Asked whether Royal Malaysia Police will engage with its foreign counterparts to assist with the probe, Ayob said it would be unlikely as Healy's act is not deemed as a criminal offence in the UK where he is residing.

On another matter, he said police are still completing their probe on Jasmine Loo, an associate of fugitive businessperson Low Taek Jho (Jho Low), who was allegedly involved in the 1MDB scandal.

Asked by reporters, Ayob said there are currently no new developments, after over two weeks since her arrest on July 8.

Since then, Loo had expressed readiness to assist authorities in expediting asset recovery efforts related to the scandal. - Mkini
