MACC expected to quiz ex-cabinet minister over arrest of businesspersons

MACC is expected to question a former cabinet minister to facilitate investigations into the arrest of two businesspersons renowned for distributing Indian movies and bringing in artistes from India to perform in Malaysia.

Sources told Malaysiakini that a businessperson-cum-politician from Negeri Sembilan was also detained in the operation.

The suspect, who is a member of Bersatu associate wing, had previously announced his intention to contest in the upcoming state election.

Malaysiakini has contacted the former minister for comment.

Online news portal FMT identified one of the suspects as Abdul Malik Dasthigeer, the founder and chairperson of Malik Group of Companies, which comprises Malik Streams Corporation Sdn Bhd, Malik Maju Sdn Bhd, Malik Streams Properties Sdn Bhd, Malik Streams Antenna Movies Sdn Bhd, and Malik Streams Production & Distribution.

Sources said the second suspect is also a film distributor who earlier this year held a concert featuring a prominent Tamil music composer and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as the chief guest.

The second suspect's company also distributed the premier's biopic “Anwar: The Untold Story.”

According to sources, the suspects were detained to assist investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla).

The sources revealed that the anti-graft agency had frozen assets worth more than RM300 million pending investigations.

More than 30 individuals, including family members and friends of the suspects, have been called in for questioning. - Mkini
