The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting on the Pulai parliamentary constituency and Simpang Jeram state seat by-elections on Aug 3 following the death of its incumbent.
In a statement today, the EC confirmed that it had received the official notifications from the Dewan Rakyat and Johor State Legislative Assembly speakers on July 25 regarding the vacancies for both seats.
According to the commission, the meeting will be chaired by EC chairperson Abdul Ghani Salleh.
Key dates and details for the by-elections will be discussed, such as the election writ issuance, nomination day, and polling day.
The meeting will also discuss the eligible voter list and other preparations.
“A media session will be held immediately after the special meeting,” the commission said.
The EC stated that as per the constitutional provisions, Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution and Article 23(5) of the Johor State Constitution, it is mandated that both seats be filled within 60 days from the date of a vacancy occurring.
By-elections for the two seats must be held following the death of its incumbent, Salahuddin Ayub, who was also the domestic trade and cost of living minister.
He died at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar at 9.23pm on Sunday after undergoing surgery due to a brain haemorrhage.
He was 61. - Mkini
