The upcoming Gerakan party election will see a four-cornered contest for the president's post, each with a running mate for deputy president.
The contenders include incumbent president Dominic Lau (above, centre) and deputy president Oh Toh Keong, announced Gerakan election coordination committee chief Soo Kay Ping at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
The other three pairs are Gerakan vice-president Michael Gan Peng Lam and Penang Gerakan deputy chief Dr Kiew Hen Chong; Gerakan former secretary-general Liang Teck Meng and Gerakan deputy speaker V Prabagaran; Federal Territories party chief Lau Hoi Keong and Gerakan secretary-general Mak Kah Keong.
Previously, Malaysiakini reported that negotiations ensuring a straight fight against Lau for the Gerakan presidency failed to materialise.
Lau was elected as the Gerakan president in 2018 and will mount his first title defence, an important victory as it comes with powers to decide on the candidate list for the upcoming six-state elections.
Four contenders are also vying for three vice-president's posts in the party election to be held on July 15.
Meanwhile, there were no contests against incumbents in all positions in the youth and women's wing. - Mkini
