The MACC has reportedly summoned all 10 Kedah state executive councillors for questioning regarding the alleged theft of rare earth element (REE) resources in the state.
According to a report by the New Straits Times, caretaker menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor expressed shock over the matter to reporters in Alor Setar today.
“I am also surprised. Never before have executive councillors been called in to verify the minutes of a meeting.
“Some of them have given their statements, some have not.
“Perhaps I will be called in after that,” he was quoted as saying.
The report also quoted Halimaton Shaadiah Saad, who is caretaker chairperson for women, family and community development, confirming that the MACC has contacted her to give her statement.
“Perhaps I will do so tomorrow. I am not sure why I am being called in because I have not met them yet,” she was quoted as saying.
It was reported last Tuesday that the MACC has launched an investigation on allegations of illegal REE mining in Bukit Enggang, Sik, which entailed claims of corruption and abuse of power.
It also arrested a senior official at Menteri Besar Kedah Incorporated as well as a company director in relation to the case.
MACC chief Azam Baki said on Thursday last week that the commission has questioned 12 people so far and will be questioning Sanusi as well.
According to NST’s report today, however, Sanusi said the MACC has yet to contact him about the case. - Mkini
