In exchange for handing over the Dusun Tua seat to Umno to contest in the upcoming polls, DAP said it came with a condition, to suggest a non-assemblyperson as the state speaker.
And their proposed candidate for the Selangor assembly speaker would be incumbent Banting assemblyperson Lau Weng San, said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.
“When we were asked to hand over Dusun Tua, our condition is for us to suggest a non-assemblyperson as state assembly speaker.
“And we suggested for Lau,” Loke said when asked about DAP’s decision to give Dusun Tua to Umno.
Loke said this at a press conference at the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, announcing the party’s Selangor candidates.
Lau will not be defending his Banting seat.
Loke said their condition was conveyed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who agreed to the deal.
Dusun Tua is held by a DAP incumbent, Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof.
Dusun Tua is a Malay-majority seat with about 63 percent Malay voters, followed by Chinese (28 percent), Indians (seven percent), and others (two percent).
Previously, Loke said party leaders were “upset” about having to give up Dusun Tua to Umno but they would comply with the decision. - Mkini
