Perikatan Nasional Youth deputy chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said that MCA and MIC’s decision to not contest in the upcoming state elections will only be an advantage to PN.
He claimed this is because Umno will not have the support of the coalition allies.
“We are quite confident of the advantage that PN has, given that MCA and MIC have decided not to contest with BN.
"Umno is running alone this time around, and MCA and MIC are not helping them,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Wan Fayhsal (above) was speaking at a press conference prior to PN lodging a police report against DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng’s temple remarks on Friday.
MCA and MIC announced last week that it would not field candidates in the six state polls, but will continue to campaign for BN.
Meanwhile, Wan Fayhsal also claimed that Pakatan Harapan could no longer rely on support from non-Malays.
“Non-Malay voters have been waiting for Anwar (Ibrahim) to become prime minister for more than 20 years.
"Yet, after becoming prime minister, he is not behaving as one. So, I do think this (state polls) is going to be a national referendum on the government,” he said.
On Kedah, the Machang MP expressed optimism that PN would suffer minimal losses while extending its leads in other seats.
“We might lose only three seats in Kedah in the state elections, but for the rest (of the seats), we do think we will win big, just as what has happened before in the 15th general election last year,” he added.
Biggest challenge
However, Wan Fayhsal was more reserved about PN’s chances in Selangor, saying the state remained the coalition’s biggest challenge to date.
“We are aware that the situation in Selangor is very different from that in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah. However, we are determined to prove to the residents of Selangor that we are a government-in-waiting.”
The Bersatu Youth chief also implied that former Selangor menteri besar Azmin Ali will be contesting in Selangor, and that Azmin will be accompanied by “many more interesting candidates that will be announced soon”. - Mkini
