PETALING JAYA: The CEO of a state’s Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) has been remanded for three days over alleged corruption and abuse of power in relation to a more than RM13 million bribe.

A source in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said a woman director of a company has also been remanded for three days and that the case involves the mining sector.

The source said the company allegedly conducted mining activities illegally and was protected by “certain authorities” since 2020.

“Investigations uncovered that several payments believed to total more than RM13 million were given by the company from 2020 to 2023 as kickbacks to protect its illegal mining activities.

“The company, owned by the woman who was remanded, is believed to have obtained the approval for a timber latex clone project in two compartments in the state in 2016.”

The source said the purpose of the project was to replant timber latex clone trees in logging areas. In 2020, the firm applied to conduct rare earths mining in these same compartments, the source added.

“However, the state government has yet to approve the company’s application.”

When contacted, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed that the duo had been detained. They are being probed under Sections 17 and 23 of the MACC Act. - FMT
